Custom Radiolabelling & Stable Isotope Labelling

At Selcia, the synthesis of compounds bearing radioactive or stable isotopes at defined positions within a molecule is a particular strength. We specialise in the custom preparation of carbon-14 (14C) and tritium (3H) labelled compounds for use as tracers in pre-clinical and environmental studies, offering the equivalent of an in-house radiochemistry group. We can also prepare radiolabelled material according to cGMP concepts suitable for use by laboratories carrying out human studies.

Since our company’s inception, we have completed almost four hundred projects for pharmaceutical, agrochemical, cosmetics, household chemicals and specialty chemicals industries. During that time, our radiochemistry unit has grown from a small core team to a group of almost twenty chemists, of which over half have PhD degrees. Our group is comprised of highly skilled radiochemists with many years industrial experience in large pharmaceutical and agrochemical companies. Our chemists are used to carrying out multistep syntheses and have experience with a broad range of different classes of molecules and reactions including:

  • Modification of natural products (macrolide antibiotics, beta lactam antibiotics, anthracyclins, di- and triterpenes)
  • Oligopeptides
  • Aromatic and heterocyclic compounds
  • Isoprenoid compounds and steroids
  • Lipids
  • Carbohydrates
  • Organometallic reactions (Grignard reactions, lithiations, cuprate reactions, Pd-chemistry, boron enolate chemistry, Wittig reactions, etc.)
  • Microwave chemistry
  • Asymmetric synthesis & enantiomer separation (including preparative chiral HLPC)

Our customers include companies without their own radiolabelling capabilities as well as those with internal radiochemistry groups. For the latter, Selcia functions as a capacity buffer during periods of peak demand. We carry out fixed cost projects as well as time and materials based projects. A growing number of customers have chosen to enter into long-term contracts with Selcia and chemists are dedicated exclusively to projects for that customer for a defined period (FTE contract).

Projects are always unique to an individual customer. All our products are delivered with a comprehensive analytical data package, including full spectroscopic analysis and experimental documentation. A Certificate of Analysis specifying chemical as well as radiochemical purity by NMR, MS, radio-HPLC and radio-TLC (where appropriate) accompanies each compound. If required, analyses can be GLP certified and as such are suitable for regulatory submission and beyond. Customers can maintain their stock of radiolabelled compounds at Selcia, we provide long-term storage provided free of charge. Stored compounds can be re-analysed and re-purified if necessary upon request and shipped to any destination worldwide.
